Save Money with Off-Peak
Are you thinking about a new heating system sometime soon? Be sure to check the advantages of off-peak electric heat.
Low Cost Heating
Off-peak electric heat only costs 6.8 cents per kWh (6.4 cents for the regular rate plus .4 cents for the Minnkota surcharge). That would be equal to paying $1.00 per gallon for LP gas with your old gas furnace, or $1.50 with a high-efficiency model. We have returned to offering the low rate year-round. Off-peak is still the best heating value.
Cooling and Heating with Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Air Source Heat Pumps can be about 300% efficient, so for every kWh you purchase, you get the BTU equivalent of 3 kWh’s of heat out of your ASHP. Reverse this process in the summer, and heat is moved OUT of your house, and your home is air conditioned. For more information on these efficient units, visit https://energy.gov/energysaver/air-source-heat-pumps.
Check Out ETS (Electric Thermal Storage)
ETS heating units don’t require a backup system to get the off-peak rate because they store enough heat to get you through the control time. They are available in room units and furnaces.
Sales Tax Exemption
During the winter months, your electricity used for heating is exempt from Minnesota State Sales Tax. Call us at 1-888-634-2202 to have the form sent to you.
Building a New Home?
There are many off-peak electric systems today. There may be tax credits for geothermal systems. We would be happy to help you sort through the options so that you can pick a heating plan that best meets your personal needs for the years ahead.
A Long List of Satisfied Customers
Since our off-peak heating programs were established in 1977, we have seen over 2,500 residential members install safe, clean, inexpensive off-peak electric heat in their homes and businesses. This is almost half of all our customers. Why don’t you check out the advantages soon?
Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging
North Star Electric Cooperative wants to make it easier for our members to consider electric vehicles as a personal transportation option. To do this, we provide rebates for installing a 240-volt Level 2 charger, as well as two rate options for charging. The money-saving off-peak rate is about 40-50% lower than the standard electric rate. For more information, download our EV program brochure here.
